The Breakdown of Breakdowns

Breakdowns, cataclysmic though they may seem, have rather simplistic origins.  In fact, the frustration, fears, and tears that sometimes catch a ride on our overloaded brains, are just bit players on the stage of imbalance – the true source of our breakdowns.  Can we avoid this imbalance?  Yes!

Find a purpose.  A reason for being, greater than ourselves, brings a contentedness that works wonders for mental health.

Nutrition.  Our mental state takes a lot of its cues from how we treat our bodies.  Warding off potential breakdowns can be as simple as counting calories.  

Exercise.  A little cardio is good for more than just heart health.  Exercise releases mood boosting chemicals in the brain, as well as painkillers.

Perform acts of kindness – volunteer.  Satisfaction often follows those who lend a helping hand to others.  Showing kindness, therefore, can often result in a helper’s high – a mixture of the au naturale mood booster, reward, and painkilling chemicals.

Train your mind to see the positives.  Confucius once said, “he who conquers himself is the mightiest warrior.”  Our power lies in our ability to choose positive thoughts and responses over negative ones.

Tap into your spiritual side.  Scientifically speaking, those of us who believe in a Higher Power tend to have a healthier outlook on life.  This belief gives us purpose beyond that which we may experience in our day-to-day lives, and can fill us with hope and security.  

Be creative.  The intelligent side of our brain is the wild child that can sometimes get us into trouble.  In order to counteract any tiresome thoughts or worries, we must feed our creative side an average of 2 hours per day.

Don’t sweat the small stuff.  “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor,” said Franklin D Roosevelt.  While we might be navigating tumultuous waters, we must still look for the silver linings.
